FIELD: chemistry.

SUBSTANCE: diesel fuel containing DBT can be oxidised using a heterogeneous catalyst and an organohydroperoxide oxidant which proves effective for the selective oxidation and removal of refractory sulphur compounds from diesel fuel. A sulphoxidation method includes providing a hydrocarbon fraction which includes at least one sulphur compound; providing an oxidant containing organohydroperoxide; providing a non-polymer catalyst comprising a metal compound represented by the general formula M(OOR)(OH)(OR')2 or a polymer catalyst formed by the said non-polymer catalyst, where M is a metal selected from titanium, tungsten or rhenium; R is selected from a group consisting of hydride, C1-C22 alkyl groups, C6-C30 aryl groups and/or C7-C30 alkylaryl groups; and where R' is selected from a group consisting of ethylene glycol, glycerol, sorbitol, xylitol and/or mixtures thereof; contacting the hydrocarbon fraction with the oxidant in the presence of the catalyst, resulting in the oxidation of at least one sulphur compound.

EFFECT: oxidative desulphuration (ODS) is an attractive alternative to the hydrodesulphuration (HDS) technology due to its lower energy requirement for the removal of refractory sulphur compounds, such as dibenzothiophene (DBT), from heavier petroleum fractions.
