FIELD: ecology.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to ecology and can be applied to monitoring states of permafrost territories with purpose of early detection of critical states. Method for determining above-soil cover digression in Arctic zone includes registration of two different types of signals by tools installed on space carrier: solar flow reflected from underlying surface, and proper surface upward radiation in infrared range. Depending on moisture of above-soil cover these signals have bidirectional nature, for their pixel by pixel ratio in synthetic matrix can provide stable contrast image for detection of critical state areas on image. Using methods for spatial differentiation, contours of critical state sections are marked, function of image fractal dimensions inside selected area is calculated, and compared with fractal size of test (reference) section. Results of processing and selecting critical sections are plotted on contour map of Arctic zone.

EFFECT: method provides reliability and accuracy in detecting early signs of critical changes of ground cover.
