FIELD: chemistry.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method of producing 3-alkyl-3-methyl-1-phenyl-3-ols of formula (1), where R=CH3, C2H5, C4H9, C6H13, which are used as precursors in synthesis of natural compounds, having various biological activity, which can be used in pharmaceutical industry for synthesis of medicinal preparations, as well as forming light-fast coatings.

EFFECT: method comprises reacting styrene with ethylaluminium dichloride (EtAlCl2) and ketone of general formula MeCOR, where R=CH3, C2H5, C4H9, C6H13, in presence of magnesium (Mg, powder) and a Cp2ZrCl2 catalyst in molar ratio styrene:MeCOR:[Al]:Mg:[Zr] = 10:10:(20-30):(10-14):(0 8/10-1 2/10) in tetrahydrofuran in an argon atmosphere at 20-22 °C and atmospheric pressure for 8 hours.
