FIELD: machine building.
SUBSTANCE: invention can be used to recover large-dimension parts like shafts, in particular ship propulsion and intermediate shafts, by facing. After preliminary examination of the surface to be recovered for the presence of defects like metal discontinuities a nondestructive inspection method is to be used for macrostructure metal part examination in cross section on the presumed area of transition from facing metal to the parent metal corresponding the dangerous section of the part. In the said cross section of the part limits of decarbonisation of metal sections, boarding the detected non-metallic inclusions, are determined. Taking into account the location of nonmetal inclusions areas the points of facing process start and end are determined at the distance of K ≥ s from the nearest decarbonisation boarder, where s - zone of its thermal effect.
EFFECT: method provides higher reliability and durability of operation of repaired shafts.
