SUBSTANCE: invention relates to image capturing devices and methods of controlling image capturing devices. Result is achieved by that image capturing device comprises: image sensor, having a pixel region, which includes a plurality of pixels units arranged in a matrix, each having a first and a second photoelectric conversion unit, and storage means, provided for each column; and driving means, configured to drive image sensor, for each pixel unit to be read from plurality of pixel units, by means of exclusive selection of operation of combining signal of first photoelectric conversion unit and signal of second photoelectric conversion unit for each pixel unit and outputting combined signal to storage means, operation for reading signal from first photoelectric conversion unit of each pixel unit to storage means or operation for reading signal from second photoelectric conversion unit of each pixel unit to storage means.

EFFECT: technical result is reading pixel signals with accuracy, sufficient for detecting phase difference, without increasing size of circuit and time for reading image sensor, as well as without deterioration of image quality.
