FIELD: chemistry.

SUBSTANCE: invention can be used in production of sealing materials, low-density heat-distributing materials and sorbents. First, hydrolysed graphite nitrate particles are mixed with granulated particles of carbamide in amount of 5 to 20 wt%. Obtained mixture is heated to temperature of thermal expansion – not less than 1,000 °C and kept at said temperature. Obtained thermally expanded graphite has packed density 1–5 g/l and pH of 7–8.

EFFECT: invention reduces labour input of process and amount of harmful gas emissions into atmosphere.
