FIELD: measuring equipment.

SUBSTANCE: disclosed group of invention relates to fibre-optic sensors. Disclosed method of estimating distance, as well as device implementing said method includes: generation of optical signal with wave length in certain wavelength range, wherein optical signal is modulated using modulating signal with modulation frequency. At that, making transmission of modulated optical signal from optical radiation source into optical fibre, wherein optical fibre is in contact with moving loading element installed on position along optical fibre. Besides, optical fibre includes plurality of detection locations made with possibility to reflect light in wavelength range under load from loading element and light transmission in wavelength range with no load from loading element; receiving reflected signal, which includes light reflected from at least one of detection locations; reflected signal demodulation using reference signal for generating reflected signal data; and determining distance to position along optical fibre based on reflected signal data.

EFFECT: higher accuracy of determining distance to position along optical fibre.
