FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method of producing highly pure magnesium by distillation at reduced pressure, as well as a device for implementing method. According to method, starting material in form of a magnesium-containing metal melt is in contact with upper region of a condensation vessel in upper region of a retort. Retort consists of material, which does not release volatile inclusions into magnesium vapour. Upper zone of retort is brought to temperature higher than boiling point of magnesium within two level lines, and then kept constant so that vapour rises from boiling magnesium-containing molten metal and fills internal volume of upper zone of retort. Vapour filtering into upper zone of condensation vessel, is condensed under lower level line and collected in form of a highly pure melt in lower zone of condensation vessel. To prevent ingress of contaminated melt, which falls from zone above top level line, to hole of condensation vessel, protection is provided with a cover, which moves contaminated magnesium back into melt.
EFFECT: invention ensures production of highly pure magnesium, which after solidification forms a compact unit suitable for plastic forming.
