FIELD: chemical or physical processes.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method of producing high-purity magnesium by distillation at reduced pressure, as well as a device for realizing the method. According to method, starting material in form of a magnesium-containing metal melt is in contact with upper region of a condensation vessel in upper region of a retort. Retort consists of material that does not release volatile inclusions into magnesium vapor. Upper zone of retort is brought to temperature higher than boiling point of magnesium within two level lines, and then held constant so that steam rises from boiling magnesium-containing metal melt and fills inner volume of upper zone of retort. Vapor leaks into the upper zone of the condensation vessel is condensed under the lower level line and collected in the form of highly pure melt in the lower zone of the condensation vessel. To prevent ingress of contaminated melt, which falls from the zone above the upper level line, to the opening of the condensation vessel is protected by a cover, which moves contaminated magnesium back into melt.
EFFECT: invention ensures production of highly pure magnesium, which after solidification forms a compact unit suitable for plastic forming.
