FIELD: metallurgy.
SUBSTANCE: protective gas mixture for the treatment of a magnesium alloy containing no zirconium, comprises, in wt %, 75-90 carbon dioxide, sulfur hexafluoride 0.5-1.0 air 8-23.5, boron compound selected from the group, comprising boron trifluoride and boron oxide, 0.5-1.02. The protective gas mixture may be used in the melting of alloys of Mg-Al-Zn, including ML5, ML5pch, VML18.
EFFECT: possibility to mechanize and automate the process, improve moulding quality by eliminating flux corrosion reducing gas content and stabilizing properties.
