FIELD: lighting.
SUBSTANCE: light source device comprises: a gas discharge lamp which emits light; a gas discharge lamp excitation unit that supplies excitation current to excite the gas discharge lamp to the gas discharge lamp; and a control unit which controls the gas discharge lamp excitation unit. Shape of the basic excitation current curve alternately has the first and the second periods. The absolute value of the excitation current during the first period is relatively smaller than the absolute value of the excitation current during the second period. During the first period the alternating current of frequency of 750 Hz or more is supplied as the excitation current to the gas discharge lamp.
EFFECT: reduced wear of gas discharge lamp electrode at the time of gas discharge lamp excitation, increased operating life of it.
