FIELD: physics.
SUBSTANCE: control unit includes a controller that contains a switching circuit and that selectively charges the battery from the solar panels and selectively discharges the battery to fuel the lantern. The lantern itself includes the second part of the control unit, which prevents the condition of over-charging and over-discharging the battery. This can be performed using a passive low-power circuit of the LEDs and resistors, leaving the controller to perform switching only.
EFFECT: reducing energy consumption by the controller and the LED lantern system in general.
