SUBSTANCE: method for provision of indications regarding the amount of milk remaining in the breast during lactation is based on the fat content determination in milk, decanted from the said breast, comprises milk optical characteristic measurement by an optical sensor in the fluid milk flow, which has just been decanted from the breast and received by the breast pump. Further, the optical sensor output signal representative of the said measured optical characteristic is compared to data representing the corresponding optical characteristic of milk sample with a known fat content to determine the fat content of the said human milk using the control unit, and the amount of milk remaining in the breast is determined based on the certain fat content of the said human milk using the control unit. Also a breast pump comprising a detection unit which is removably attached to the breast pump and comprises an optical sensor for milk optical characteristics measurement, and a control unit.

EFFECT: invention can determine the amount of milk remaining in the breast during lactation, without disturbing the breast pump function or user comfort and convenience.
