FIELD: lighting.
SUBSTANCE: LED exciter circuit (3) comprises at least an input section (6) to receive operating voltage from the power supply (2), an output section (8) to connect to at least one LED unit (5), a power converter (7) connected to the said input section (6) and the said output section (8) and configured to provide a lamp current (50) in the output section (8) while operating in at least first and second operating states. In order to provide an operationally flexible circuit (3) capable of operating with a plurality of different power supplies and in different load modes, in the first operating state, the power converter (7) is configured to switch between the high current generation mode (40) in which the power converter (7) is configured to select current pulses from the said power supply (2) to provide the first average input current (33a) and an off state (42) in which no current is selected from the said power supply (2). In the second operating state, the power converter (7) is at least configured to operate in a low current generation mode (41), wherein the power converter (7) is configured to select current from the power supply (2) to provide the second average input current (33b), which is lower than the first average input current (33a).
EFFECT: increased efficiency in a variety of operation modes.
