SUBSTANCE: method for interventional medical instrument calibration is implemented by means of an interventional medical instrument calibration system. The system comprises a processor-associated memory and an optical measurement module for optical feedback signal reception from the shape measurement system associated with the medical instrument body to allow the housing shape to be determined. The shape measurement system has a plurality of optical fibers. At that, a medical instrument for optical shape measurement is provided. The instrument comprises a housing, a shape measurement system associated with the housing, and a memory associated with the housing to store data specific to the device and related to the fiber-specific housing calibration, including calibration dispersion patterns for each fiber. The data is available for reading from the memory element via a cable connected to the housing. The data that contains calibration data or reference data indicative of the calibration data is obtained from the memory element. The tool housing is calibrated using data related to housing calibration.
EFFECT: calibration is achieved using calibration dispersion patterns for each fiber from a variety of optical fibers.
