FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: reversed-phase suspension polymerization method for the preparation of a polymer bead comprises the formation of aqueous monomeric droplets containing an aqueous solution of a water-soluble ethylene unsaturated monomer or a mixture of monomers, and polymerization of a monomer or monomer mixture to form a polymer bead simultaneously suspended in a non-aqueous liquid, and separation of the polymer beads. The polymerization conditions include exposing the aqueous monomeric droplets with ultraviolet light from, at least, one ultraviolet light source. The intensity of ultraviolet light is in the range of 30-1000 mW/cm2, the temperature at the reaction beginning is below 30°C. A device for the suspension polymerization method and a water-soluble or water-swellable polymer beads are also described.
EFFECT: providing a method of producing a water-soluble or water-swellable polymer bead, in which the same or improved results are obtained with respect to the particle size distribution that enables higher production rates and the ability to provide higher product volumes.
