FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: method consists in oxidizing sulfide sulfur over a wide range of pH values with an oxygen-containing gas using a water soluble organic catalyst of formula R-Men+, which contains polyvalent metal ions, in particular Ca, Ni, Fe, Hg, Co, Mn, Cu, Cr, Mo, Ti or V, where R is a polyaminocarboxylic acid residue. The solid product of the oxidation reaction is removed from the process cycle and dehydrated.
EFFECT: by carrying out the process at atmospheric pressure in the absence or minimization of solid, liquid and gaseous wastes, the method is safe, economical and environmentally friendly from all known at the moment.
