FIELD: engine devices and pumps.

SUBSTANCE: internal combustion engine includes a catalytic converter for exhaust gases and a fuel injection valve. The control device includes: an electronic control unit. The electronic control unit is configured to: (a) obtain a cetane number of fuel for the internal combustion engine; (b) obtain the target activation temperature based on the cetane number, the target activation temperature is the activation temperature of the exhaust gas catalytic converter; (c) obtain the exhaust gas temperature of the internal combustion engine; and (d), when the exhaust gas catalytic converter is heated, control the additional injection based on the difference between the exhaust gas temperature and the target activation temperature, an additional injection is performed after the main injection from the fuel injection valve.

EFFECT: ability to suppress the accumulation of sediment in the exhaust gas catalytic converter, when using fuel with a low cetane number.
