FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: method for providing a terminal functional group to a polymer comprises reacting a terminally active polymer that contains a polyene monomer unit, with α,β-ethylene unsaturated compound having the general formula (I)

where each R is independently a hydrogen atom or a C1-C10-alkyl group, M is an element of the 2-13 groups, y and z are integers under the condition that z is not zero and the sum of y+z is equal to the valence of M, and each X is independently R1, OR1, OC(O)R1, C(O)OR1 or NR12, where each R1 independently represents C1-C30-alkyl group, thereby providing the said terminal functional group of the said polymer. A terminally functional polymer prepared by the above method is also claimed.
EFFECT: obtained polymer shows increased mutual activity with dispersed fillers and can be used in the production of vulcanizates.
