SUBSTANCE: in the presented method, an optical network unit (ONU) transmits a monitoring packet via the first endpoint of the maintenance association on the first communication line connected to the ONU and the switching device on the aggregation side in order to monitor the first communication line; the ONU switches from the first communication subline of the first communication line to the first communication subline of the second communication line if it is detected that a communication line fault occurs on the first communication line; the ONU sends a notification message to the second optical line terminal (OLT), so that the second OLT switches a transmission port on; and the ONU sends an automatic protection switching message to the switching device on the aggregation side via the second endpoint of the maintenance association on the second communication line. Embodiments of the present invention are applied when switching communication lines.
