SUBSTANCE: target detecting device obtains an image by imaging the vehicle neighborhood, detects its own vehicle position based on the amount of the vehicle movement relative to its initial position, and estimates the relative position of the target located near the vehicle relative to the vehicle based on its own position and information regarding the position of the target on the map. The target detecting device sets the detection area for the target within the image based on the relative target position relative to the vehicle and detects the target from the detection area. The target detecting device estimates the error contained in the own position based on the amount of the vehicle movement relative to the initial position and adjusts the size of the detection area for the target according to the error.
