FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: rubber-like or elastomeric polymeric material is proposed, that absorbs more than 5 wt % of water and up to 500 wt % of water after immersion in demineralized water at room temperature for a sufficient time to reach saturation, comprising (a) repeating units of one or more hydrophobic organic monomers selected from butadiene, isoprene, dialkylsiloxanes, diarylsiloxanes, alkyl ethers of acrylic acid, acrylonitrile, chloroprene, fluorinated ethylene, mixtures of ethylene and vinyl acetate, mixtures of ethylene and one or more acrylic ester and mixtures of ethylene with propylene and diene, and (b) repeating units of one or more monomer (a) modified by one or more hydrophilic side group, and (c) a ligand selected from the group consisting of crown ethers, cryptand and calyxerene. The rubber-like or elastomeric polymeric material may have the form of a sheet, foam rubber, coating intended to adhere to a substrate, or fiber. The invention also relates to a method for production of the claimed material and a polymerizable composition containing the claimed material.
EFFECT: hydrophilic polymer material of this invention has improved water-absorbing properties.
