SUBSTANCE: invention relates to an escalator with a stairway or to a moving sidewalk with a pallet belt. The stairway or the pallet belt comprises at least one articulated chain (8) which, at theoretically equal distances between the engagement points, comprises successively located engagement points (27). The escalator or moving sidewalk comprises a first deflecting area and a second deflecting area with at least one gear wheel (14) of the elevator chain. At least one articulated chain is rotatably arranged between the deflecting areas, and the engagement points (27) are engaged with depressions (22) between the teeth of the chain wheel (14) of the elevator chain and at least in the depressions (22) between the teeth of a single guide gear wheel arranged in the first deflecting area. At least one chain wheel (14) of the elevator chain and/or at least one guide gear wheel has the dividing circumference (23) with the division (T) corresponding to the depressions (22) between the teeth, which corresponds to half of the distance (e) of the engaging points of the articulated chain (8).

EFFECT: increasing the service life of an escalator or a moving sidewalk.
