FIELD: mechanical engineering; escalators. SUBSTANCE: screw escalator has central vertical and fixed column, at least one first guide path engaging with column and passing in spiral-like manner along it vertical length with at least one second guide path arranged at preset radial distance from the column with several steps furnished with at least one axle. Steps in zone of their outer ends are provided with rollers engaging with guide paths. Escalator has at least one drive member connecting steps and moving in required direction of transportation. Drive member has upper and lower bending sections and step return zone outside transportation zone. Spiral passes at preset constant helix angle between upper and lower bending sections and, if necessary, between landings arranged between upper and lower bending sections. Step return zone is located under transportation zone. Step rollers roll along corresponding other guide paths passing along spiral relative to guide paths of transportation zone. Drive member is located in zone radially to outer side of steps. Step holding and guiding device are installed in zone radially to inner and (or) outer side of steps.
