SUBSTANCE: invention is based on measurement of the mtDNA heteroplasmy degree by 652ins/delG, A750G, A1555G, C3256T, T3336C, C5178A, 8516insA/C/AC, 8528insA, 8930insG, G9477A, 10958insC, A12308G, G12372A, 13047insC, 13050insC, C14766T, G15059A and A15326G mutations. The measured indices of heteroplasmy are used as variables in the formula by which the degree of the total mutational load of the mitochondrial genome is calculated. If the threshold value of this parameter which is 40.3 points is exceeded, atherosclerosis and individual genetic predisposition to atherosclerosis, ischemic heart disease and myocardial infarction are diagnosed.
