FIELD: metallurgy.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to metallurgy and can be used in the construction of a metallurgical furnace. Furnace is provided with a member that applies a force to the furnace outer shell, said member comprising at least two cables spaced at a certain interval along the vertical height of the segmented outer shell, passing around the outer surface of the segmented outer shell to compress the segmented outer shell of the furnace towards the furnace space, while contracting the refractory during cooling of the furnace space. Force-exerting member may comprise a tension member. Furnace comprises a vertical compression member for exerting a compressive force upon the upper surface of the refractory, due to which there is a vertical pressing of the refractory when it is compressed during the cooling of the furnace space. Furnace comprises a cooling system including a sleeve surrounding a layer of heated air, and air displacement members for displacing away the heated air from the furnace. Furnace comprises a roof, having suspension members extending therethrough, supporting an inner mesh, the inner mesh supporting insulating material.

EFFECT: invention enables to prevent the destruction of the refractory from within due to chemical, thermal and mechanical action, and also to provide thermal insulation of the environment by means of the furnace roof which forms a barrier, preventing the outflow of toxic gases.
