FIELD: physics.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to the field of spectroscopy and relates to a method for detecting an element in a sample. Method is carried out using a laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) system including a first laser, a second laser, a spectrometer, and a detector. Method includes emitting a first pulse from the first laser to the sample surface, then emitting a second pulse from the second laser to the sample surface and detecting molecular emissions of a molecule comprising said element. Detection begins after the delay time following the emitting of the second pulse.

EFFECT: delay time is selected so as to improve the detection of molecular emissions as compared to the atomic emissions of the atom containing said element.
