SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method for reading license plate numbers using optical character recognition (OCR) in a road network. Method includes: recording an image of the registration numbers at a first location in the road network, reading, using the OCR, the sequence of characters from the image of license plate numbers and storing the OCR data set in a database; recording the image of license plate numbers at a second location in the road network, reading, using OCR, the sequence of characters from the image of license plate numbers and forming a current OCR data set; and, if at least one of the confidence indicators of the current OCR data set falls below the first minimum confidence value, at least one stored OCR data set is selected from the database, in which the recorded image of license plate numbers from which has a similarity score greater than the minimum similarity value, and/or has the greatest relative similarity to the recorded image of the license plate numbers from the current OCR data set, and at least one selected OCR data set is used to improve the character sequence of license plate numbers from the current OCR data set.

EFFECT: improved reading of license plates.
