FIELD: meteorology.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to the field of meteorology and can be used to identify adverse and dangerous meteorological phenomena of convective origin. At the observation point, the electric field strength of the surface atmosphere is measured with a discreteness of 1 minute or 1 second. Above obtained values of the electric field strength are transformed into values of the electric field potential gradient. Above obtained values of the potential gradient are compared with the threshold values characteristic for cumulonimbus clouds. If the value of the potential gradient exceeds the absolute value of one of the threshold values, it is concluded that there are cumulonimbus clouds in the vicinity of the observation point.

EFFECT: increased reliability and efficiency of detection of the approaching developed cumulonimbus clouds.
