FIELD: machine building.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a system for treating exhaust gases (G) of motor vehicle engine (12). System comprises particle filter (16), and its regeneration is controlled by bringing the temperature of the gases at the inlet of particle filter (16) to first set temperature (T1) in order to initiate the combustion of soot accumulated in particle filter (16). Critical area (32) and normal area (31) are defined on the basis of the point of operation of engine (12), which is characterised by a load of engine (12) and number of revolutions, and the temperature of exhaust gases (G) is brought to first set temperature (T1) in normal area (31) and to second set temperature (T2), which is lower than first set temperature (T1), in critical area (32), wherein second set temperature (T2) depends on the estimated oxygen content in exhaust gas (G) at the inlet of particulate filter (16).
EFFECT: use of the invention reduces the risk of runaway operation during regeneration of the particulate filter.
