SUBSTANCE: invention relates to the field of image compression. Image compression method includes the following steps: obtaining an image of the object; division of the image of the object into regions, which are to be compressed and to pixel blocks with the specified sizes, transformation of data in each pixel block into frequency data; obtaining quantization tables, which correspond to each area to be compressed, in which different quantization tables correspond to different quantization scales; quantization of frequency data using a quantization table; and encoding the quantized image data to obtain a compressed image; the division of the image of an object into regions includes the definition of the Visible Area (VA) and not-VA in the image of the object; and obtaining a quantization table corresponding to each region includes obtaining the first and second type of quantization tables, where the quantization scales of the tables of the second type are larger, than for the tables of the first type, and the definition of the quantization value.

EFFECT: technical result is an improvement in image quality and a reduction in the amount of space for storing images.
