FIELD: engines and pumps.
SUBSTANCE: invention can be used in fuel injection systems of internal combustion engines (ICE). Systems and methods for separating higher octane fuel from a fuel mixture are presented. In one example, higher octane fuel is separated from lower octane fuel stored in multiple fuel tanks, by forming vapours of higher octane fuel and said vapours are allowed to condense in a fuel tank holding higher octane fuel thereby preventing vapours of high octane fuel from returning into tanks with low octane fuel. Approach is applicable to fuel systems that include multiple fuel tanks 230, 232, 234, storing different types of fuel, wherein one or more tanks 302, 306, 316 can be used in the fuel system to collect and store fuel vapours from said fuel tanks.
EFFECT: parasitic engine losses are not increased by having to separate higher octane fuel from lower octane fuel a second time, and more efficient use of fuel vapour is achieved.
