FIELD: manufacturing technology.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a traffic light detection device and a method for detecting a traffic light. Device, implemented by the method of detecting the traffic light, uses an image capture unit mounted on the vehicle, to extract synchronized pixels from the captured image of the surrounding vehicle environment, whose brightness varies synchronously with the AC period of electric power, supplied to the traffic light, and detects the traffic light from the synchronized pixels. Light detection device is provided with: a positional change calculating unit, that calculates the positional change values of the continuously extracted positions of the synchronized pixels; and a signal lamp detection unit that determines, as a possible warning light, synchronized pixels whose positional variation value is equal to or less than the threshold value.

EFFECT: accurate detection of the warning light is provided, preventing the erroneous detection of the stepped brightness characteristic as a signal lamp, even when the brightness transitions are moving.
