FIELD: instrument engineering.

SUBSTANCE: cutting tool (20) comprises tool holder (22) having pocket (26) and single-sided square-shaped indexable cutting insert (30) removably secured in pocket (26). Pocket (26) comprises seating surface (60) having floor surface (62) with single engagement groove (64) recessed therein and two separate support pads (66) protruding therefrom. Engagement groove (64) includes a pair of parallel-extending groove flank surfaces (68) forming a V-shaped cross-section, and each of two support pads (66) has raised support surface (70), wherein said two support surfaces (70) are coplanar. Cutting insert (30) comprises opposing upper and lower surfaces (32, 34), four corner surfaces (40) and corner cutting edge (44) formed at the intersection of upper surface (32) with each of four corner surfaces (40). Lower surface (34) includes base surface (46) and has four engagement ridges (50) protruding from base surface (46), wherein each engagement ridge (50) includes a pair of parallel-extending ridge flank surfaces (54) forming a V-shaped cross-section, and each engagement ridge (50) intersects one of four corner surfaces (40) and extends therefrom towards central axis (A1). Lower surface (34) is clamped against seating surface (60) of pocket (26) solely by pair of ridge flank surfaces (54) of engagement ridge (50), located closest to operative corner cutting edge (44) making contact with corresponding pair of groove flank surfaces (68) in single engagement groove (64), and base surface (46) making contact with two raised support surfaces (70) at two bearing zones (72), entirely located further from operative corner cutting edge (44) than central axis (A1).

EFFECT: higher strength of the cutting insert and accuracy of its positioning.
