FIELD: optics.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to optical technique. Optical modulator, each pixel of which contains a fixed flat polarizer overlapping the pixel area and a parallel moving polarizer parallel to it. Light modulation occurs by rotating a movable polarizer with respect to a stationary polarizer. Mobile polarizer can be made in the form of a self-supporting polarization grating from parallel straight strips or filaments of magnetic or non-magnetic material. Mobile polarizer can also be made as a self-supporting grating with an element or stiffeners made of a dielectric, semiconductor or conductive material. Element or stiffeners of the polarization grating and the strip of the polarization grating are made of the same conductive material.
EFFECT: technical result consists in increasing speed of the optical modulator, reducing the thickness of the device and simplifying the manufacturing technology.
