FIELD: measuring equipment.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to electrical measuring equipment and can be used to determine the topology of overhead power transmission lines (PTLs), that is, to determine the presence of branches, distances to attachments, and the lengths of branches. Essence: sounding pulses are sent to the line. Pulses reflected from the inhomogeneities enter the receiving-regulating device, then the measuring device for analyzing the trace. Using the initial section of the trace, the value of the repetition frequency of the reflected pulses, corresponding to inhomogeneities of the unbranched line, is determined. Presence of the branch is determined by the stepwise increase in the repetition frequency of the reflected pulses on the trace. Attachment point of the branch is specified by the presence of a negative polarity pulse on the trace. End point of the branch is determined by the stepwise decrease in the repetition frequency of the reflected pulses. Length of the branch is determined by the specified attachment point and the end point of the branch.
