FIELD: optics.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to an optical transmission system for analog or digital radio frequency signals using a solid-state laser with external modulation. Optical modulator includes a semiconductor device having an optical input for receiving a coherent light beam of continuous radiation, a waveguide for transferring a light beam, an electrode connected to the input of a radio frequency signal and a bias voltage to create an electric field in the waveguide and optical modulation of the light beam, when the beam passes through the waveguide, and an optical output coupled to the waveguide for transferring the modulated optical signal. Mode of operation of the modulator includes the steps of: sending a coherent light beam of continuous radiation (cw) to the optical input and applying a bias voltage to the electrode such that the coherent light beam is optically modulated by a signal modulating the absorption characteristic in the semiconductor device so that the waveguide operates in the absorption region at wavelengths less than the peak amplification wavelength.
EFFECT: technical result is power increase, elimination of distortions.
