FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a process for the preparation of dehydrated microfibrillated cellulose (MFC) in which i) an aqueous MFC suspension is prepared, ii) if necessary, dewatering said MFC slurry by mechanical means to produce a partially dewatered MFC slurry, and iii) subjecting the MFC slurry or partially dewatered MFC slurry to one or more drying operations by adjusting the MFC slurry or partially dewatered MFC suspension in contact with one or more absorbent materials containing a superabsorbent polymer to form anhydrous MFC.
EFFECT: process of the invention can prevent agglomeration during the drying process and produce a MFC product that has a high dry matter content and is re-dispersible.
