FIELD: medicine.
SUBSTANCE: invention can be used to staple tissue. Circular stapling device comprises a stapling head assembly configured to push staples into tissue, and a shaft assembly with a plurality of joint segments. Each joint element comprises a male part and a female part which receives the male part. Segments are rotatable relative to each other in a first, uncompressed position and are lockable relative to each other in a second, compressed position. Plurality of resilient members are disposed on each male part. Each resilient member is configured to bias the corresponding male part from the female part to a first, uncompressed position. Anvil is configured to proximally retract toward the shaft assembly.
EFFECT: shaft assembly and the anvil are together configured to at least cut or staple tissue based on one rotation input signal.
