SUBSTANCE: invention relates to biotechnology and provides methods for testing a sample for the presence of one or more targets. Methods comprise contacting a sample with one or more target-specific binding partners, wherein each target-specific binding partner is linked to a docking strand and wherein target-specific binding partners of different specificity are linked to different docking strands, contacting the sample with labeled imager strands having a nucleotide sequence that is complementary to a docking strand to obtain labeled imager strands stably bound to the docking strands, imaging the sample and extinguishing a signal from the labeled imager strand or removing the bound labeled imager strands from the docking strands by enzymic degradation, modification or destruction of the labeled imager strands.

EFFECT: inventions provide a wider range of methods for imaging interesting targets at high spatial resolution.
