SUBSTANCE: group of inventions relates to medical equipment. Method for self-testing a defibrillator includes periodic performing a self-test protocol with a first frequency, detecting a state that exceeds a threshold condition; automatic switching the self-test protocol to a second frequency in response to the detection step and periodic performing the self-test protocol with a second frequency. First frequency is higher than the second frequency. Condition and the threshold condition are conditions selected from the following sets, respectively: the condition is an elapsed time, and the threshold condition is a predetermined time interval; condition is the measured number of defibrillator activations, and the threshold condition is the threshold number of defibrillator activations; state is a number of completed self-testings, and the threshold condition is a predetermined number of self-testings; and the condition is the environmental condition, and the threshold condition is the threshold condition of the environment. Variant of the method for self-testing the defibrillator and the defibrillator having the automatic self-test protocol are disclosed.

EFFECT: technical result consists in providing automatic self-testing of the defibrillator in standby mode.
