SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a process for the production of a multilayer paint system on a metal substrate in which a base coating or directly sequential base coating layers are produced directly on a metal substrate coated with a cured electrochemical coating, lacquer coating is obtained directly on one base coating or on the uppermost of a variety of base coatings, and then one or more base and varnish coatings are cured together, wherein at least one base coating material that is used to prepare the base coatings comprises at least one aqueous dispersion containing at least one copolymer (CP), wherein said copolymer (CP) is prepared by initially loading an aqueous dispersion of at least one polyurethane and subsequently polymerizing the mixture of unsaturated olefin monomers in the presence of polyurethane from (I), where a water-soluble activator is used, unsaturated olefinic monomers are dosed such that a concentration of 6.0 % by weight based on the total amount of unsaturated olefinic monomers that are used for the polymerization is not exceeded in the reaction solution during the entire reaction time, and a mixture of unsaturated olefinic monomers includes at least one unsaturated polyolefin monomer, and also includes at least one linear hydroxy-functional reaction product (R), which has an acid number of less than 20 mg KOH/g, the preparation of which involves the use of at least one compound (v) containing two functional groups (v.1), and an aliphatic or araliphatic hydrocarbyl radical (v.2), which is located between the functional groups and contains from 12 to 70 carbon atoms.
