SUBSTANCE: present invention relates to cardiology. Method for treating atrial enlargement and/or preventing or delaying a first atrial fibrillation in a patient having heart failure with a preserved ejection fraction (HF-PEF), comprising administrating a prodrug of the NEP inhibitor which is N-(3-carboxy-1-oxopropyl)-(4S)-(p-phenylphenylmethyl)-4-amino-(2R)-methylbutanoic acid ethyl ester or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, wherein the prodrug of the NEP inhibitor is delivered by the administration of LCZ696, which is trisodium [3-((1S, 3R)-1-biphenyl-4-ylmethyl-3-ethoxycarbonyl-1-butylcarbamoyl)propionate-(S)-3'-methyl-2'-(pentanoyl{2"-(tetrazol-5-yl)biphenyl-4'-ylmethyl}amino)butyrate]hemi-pentahydrate, in an initial dose of 50 mg twice a day, gradually changing to a final dose of 200 mg twice a day for a period of 36 weeks, to a patient in need of such treatment.

EFFECT: method provides a reduced level of NT-proBNP in plasma, reduced frequency of atrial fibrillation in the treatment of said group of patients.
