FIELD: physics.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to the field of physical oceanography and can be used to predict and evaluate abnormally high waves generated by moving weather systems. For the given values of the radial distribution of wind speed and the velocity of the cyclone motion, determine the dimensionless parameter Y. Calculate the frequency and energy of the waves by the formulas chosen depending on the dimensionless parameter Y. If the dimensionless parameter Y is greater than or equal to zero, then the trajectories of the emitted waves are considered to coincide with the direction the motion of the cyclone, and the velocity of propagation of their energy, corresponding to the group velocity. In this case, if the dimensionless parameter Y is in the interval 1–3, then the generated waves are considered to have anomalously high values and are dangerous. In this case, the wave height, the group velocity and the time through which the abnormally high waves reach a predetermined point are calculated. If the dimensionless parameter Y is less than one, then such waves are referred to waves of anomalously small amplitude that remain behind the moving cyclone and are not dangerous.

EFFECT: estimation of the heights and frequencies of wind waves, the prediction of the appearance of abnormally high waves at a given point.
