FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention is a process for the preparation of alkanesulfonic acids of the formula R-SO3-H, comprising a step of oxidising a symmetric dialkyl disulphide of formula RS2-R, in an alkanesulfonic acid solution, in the presence of catalytic amounts of nitric acid, where R is C1-12alkyl radical, and the alkanesulfonic acid used as the solvent is identical to the alkanesulfonic acid obtained during the oxidation of said dialkyl disulphide.
EFFECT: according to the invention, dialkyl disulphide concentration in the solution is not more than 20 % by weight, the ratio of dialkyl disulphide to nitric acid ranges from 2000:1 to 1:1 (mol / mol), and the concentration of alkanesulfonic acid used as a solvent is more than 70 % by weight.
