FIELD: soil or rock drilling.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to drilling operations of a well bore, and more specifically to monitoring well cuttings in returning drilling fluids, determining the size and shape distribution of particles present in well cuttings. Method comprises obtaining an image of drill cuttings by a data acquisition system that contains one or more processors. At the same time, drill cuttings are formed in the well bore and include many particles, image analysis of drill cuttings by one or several processors by obtaining three measurement results of two-dimensional distances for each particle and obtaining four measurement results of angular sizes for each particle and determining by one or several processors at least one of: the size distribution of drill cuttings particles and the distribution of drill cuttings by shape based on three measurements of two-dimensional distance and four measurements of the results of angular dimensions of each particle.
EFFECT: technical result is an increase in productivity and efficiency of drilling operations.
