FIELD: metallurgy.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to the field of metallurgy and can be used in the manufacture of composite materials with aluminum matrix for use as a deoxidizer in steel production. In the method, the molded freestanding preform is heated to a temperature which is higher than the melting point of aluminum and lower than the melting point of the iron-rich component, for a time that ensures the transition of aluminum to a liquid state, applying pressure to the free-standing preform to obtain a densely compacted iron-rich component of the free-standing preform and solidification of molten aluminum in it. Free-standing preform may also consist of aluminum particles and particles of components selected from the group consisting of steel, ferromanganese, silicocalcium, calcium carbide, rare earth metals, ferroalloy, with the exception of ferromanganese, and combinations thereof.

EFFECT: invention allows to obtain an effective and economical composite material with an aluminum matrix – steel deoxidizer, which is almost completely dense, free of brittle intermetallic compounds and allows aluminum to penetrate deep into molten steel, eliminating the unnecessary loss of this valuable metal to its unnecessary oxidation reactions in slag and atmosphere.
