FIELD: metallurgy; technological processes.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to the field of heat treatment of metals and can be used for hardening parts of automatic couplings of railway transport. Method of thermal strengthening includes induction heating of the coupler and its subsequent cooling. Induction heating is performed in the area of the working surface of the part of the coupler, excluding its edge. To build the motion path, the working surface of the part is pre-scanned. To control the movement of the inductor over the working surface of the part, automatic control is used. Heated surface is cooled by feeding water through the holes in the inductor case.
EFFECT: increase in the hardness of the most vulnerable to wear of the working surfaces of parts for automatic couplings is achieved.
