SUBSTANCE: group of inventions relates to a method for monitoring an exhaust gas sensor positioned in an exhaust system. Essence of the invention is that the sensor operation is monitored by indicating exhaust gas sensor degradation based on a shape of a distribution of extreme values of a plurality of sets of lambda differentials collected during selected operating conditions. Thus, the exhaust gas sensor can be monitored in a non-intrusive manner.

EFFECT: improved efficiency of monitoring the exhaust gas sensor operation.
