FIELD: seismology.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to the field of seismology and can be used for short-term earthquake prediction. Essence: carrying out vertical sounding of the ionosphere from the ionosonde, continuously observe the critical frequency of reflection. Calculate the difference between the average distribution of the critical frequency for the previous five days and the current distribution of the deviation of the critical frequency from the unperturbed value. Position of the maximum deviation of the critical frequency is taken as a projection of the epicenter of an earthquake on the ionosphere. Position of the epicenter of an earthquake on the earth's surface is determined by projecting along the geomagnetic power line from the center of the anomaly in the ionosphere, taking the coordinates of a point on the earth's surface for the coordinates of the predicted epicenter. At obtaining several distributions take the average position of the projection of the epicenter. Maximum size of the anomaly in the ionosphere is measured and the magnitude of the expected earthquake is estimated.
